Advanced Specialty Resins & Coating Solutions

Key facts

  • PU-acrylate (urethane acrylate) oligomers for UV-curable coatings and inks.
  • Combine polyurethane characteristics with UV-curable functionality.
  • Key properties: flexibility, adhesion, surface performance, fast UV cure.
  • Hardness and durability are adjusted to the specific application.

PU-acrylates — urethane acrylates — exist to solve a specific problem: conventional UV coatings cure fast and hard, but hard films crack. If the coated part flexes, gets creased, or has to survive forming after coating, a brittle UV film fails.

CoatPro Innovations develops PU-acrylate technologies combining polyurethane characteristics with UV-curable functionality for demanding coating and ink applications. The urethane segment supplies toughness, elongation and adhesion; the acrylate functionality supplies the fast radical cure that makes UV processing worth using in the first place.

The properties we develop toward in this family are flexibility, adhesion, surface performance, fast UV curing, and application-specific hardness and durability. Functionality — how many acrylate groups the oligomer carries — is the main lever. Lower functionality gives a softer, more flexible, more adhesive film with slower cure; higher functionality gives faster cure and a harder, more chemically resistant film with less elongation. Where your application should sit on that scale is the development question.

These oligomers are typically used as the backbone of a UV formulation alongside monomers, photoinitiators and additives. We can advise on the whole formulation, not just the oligomer, because the oligomer alone does not determine the result.

What this technology delivers

  • Flexibility

Elongation and crack resistance that conventional UV films struggle to reach.

  • Adhesion

Urethane backbone contributes adhesion across a range of substrates.

  • Surface performance

Scratch, rub and mar resistance in the cured film.

  • Fast UV curing

Full cure at line speed under conventional mercury or LED UV, per formulation.

  • Adjustable hardness and durability

Functionality selected against the flexibility-to-hardness requirement.

Ask a technical question

PU-acrylate (urethane acrylate) gives flexibility, elongation and adhesion, and is the choice when the coated part has to bend or when adhesion is the hard requirement. Epoxy acrylate gives hardness, gloss and chemical resistance at lower cost, and is the choice for rigid substrates. Many formulations blend both to reach a specific balance.

Functionality is the number of reactive acrylate groups per molecule. Low functionality (around 2) cures more slowly and gives a softer, more flexible, more adhesive film. High functionality (6 and above) cures faster and gives a harder, more crosslinked, more chemically resistant film with less elongation. It is the main dial in a UV formulation.

LED UV cure depends primarily on the photoinitiator package being matched to the LED output wavelength, rather than on the oligomer. PU-acrylate oligomers can be formulated for LED cure — we can advise on the photoinitiator selection as part of application support.

Aliphatic urethane acrylates resist yellowing and are the choice where colour stability under light exposure matters, including clear coats and white systems. Aromatic urethane acrylates cost less and cure well but yellow over time, which is acceptable in pigmented or non-critical applications.

Yes, and PU-acrylate is usually the right family for it precisely because of the flexibility requirement. The considerations are substrate heat sensitivity, adhesion to the treated film and — for food packaging — migration, which has to be evaluated against the specific regulation and end use.

Oxygen quenches the radical cure at the film surface, leaving it tacky while the bulk is cured. It is addressed by inerting with nitrogen, by increasing photoinitiator or lamp intensity, or by formulating with amine synergists — which is one reason amino acrylates exist as a product family.
