Advanced Specialty Resins & Coating Solutions

CoatPro Innovations combines polymer chemistry, formulation understanding and application knowledge to develop solutions for specific performance requirements. Our development approach considers resin architecture, solids, viscosity, curing mechanism, substrate interaction, application method and end-use performance.

The variables we work with

Resin performance is not a single number. It is the result of decisions made across several dimensions, and changing one moves the others.

  • Resin architecture

Backbone chemistry, molecular weight, functionality and crosslink density set the ceiling on what a film can do. A highly functional oligomer cures fast and hard; the same choice costs elongation.

  • Solids and viscosity

These determine what is practical on your line — how much you can apply per pass, how it behaves at your application speed, and how much solvent or water has to be removed.

  • Curing mechanism

Solvent evaporation, water evaporation and coalescence, or UV radical cure. Each brings different constraints on line speed, energy input, substrate heat tolerance and film properties.

  • Substrate interaction

Surface energy, treatment level, porosity and contamination decide whether adhesion is achievable at all, before any resin property matters.

  • Application method

Gravure, flexo, roller, spray or curtain coating each impose their own viscosity and rheology requirements.

  • End-use performance

What the coating must survive — flex, abrasion, chemicals, heat, light, washing — is the specification everything else serves.

Three cure platforms

Solvent-based systems remain the reference for adhesion to difficult substrates and for film toughness. Our polyurethane binders sit here, developed for gravure and flexographic printing on packaging films.

Water-based systems are the practical route where VOC, workplace exposure or customer requirement drives the decision. Our acrylic emulsions are developed around reliable film formation under real line conditions rather than ideal ones.

UV-curable systems deliver speed and energy efficiency, with the trade-offs of oxygen inhibition, substrate heat tolerance and — for packaging — migration. Our PU-acrylate, epoxy acrylate and amino acrylate technologies cover the main oligomer classes, and we advise on formulation rather than just supplying the oligomer.

Where innovation actually happens

In this industry, innovation is less often a new molecule than a better resolution of an old trade-off. Adhesion against block resistance. Hardness against flexibility. Cure speed against film properties. Cost against performance.

Our development work concentrates on those trade-offs, for the specific combination of substrate, process and end use a customer brings us.

Ask a technical question

Three: solvent-based systems (physical drying), water-based systems (evaporation and coalescence) and UV-curable systems (free-radical cure). The right platform depends on your substrate, line capability and regulatory position.

We start from the application, not the product. Substrate and treatment, process and line speed, drying or curing capacity, and end-use performance requirements define the problem before any resin is proposed.

Solvent-based systems dry by solvent evaporation and generally give the best adhesion to difficult substrates. Water-based systems dry by water evaporation and coalescence, with much lower VOC but greater sensitivity to line conditions. UV-curable systems cure by radical polymerisation in seconds, giving high line speed and no solvent, but require UV equipment and careful attention to oxygen inhibition and substrate heat tolerance.

Yes. Resin selection alone rarely determines the result — monomers, photoinitiators, additives and process conditions all contribute. Our technical support covers the formulation and the application, not only the product we supply.
